How Alethia handles your data
Privacy Policy
Alethia is designed with privacy in mind:
- No data collection — Alethia is a client-side application and does not operate any servers. No personal data is collected, stored, or transmitted to Alethia. During TestFlight beta testing, crash logs may be collected by Apple under their own terms and conditions.
- Local storage only — Your library, reading history, and preferences are stored locally on your device.
- Third-party services — When you connect to hosts or trackers (AniList, MyAnimeList), data is exchanged directly between your device and those services. Alethia has no visibility into this data.
- Authentication credentials — Login credentials for sources are encrypted and stored securely in your Apple device's Keychain, protected by hardware-level encryption. Credentials are never transmitted to Alethia and remain solely on your device.
Host Privacy
When you connect to a host, you are establishing a direct connection between your device and that host's server. Alethia acts as a client — it facilitates this connection but has no control over or visibility into what happens on the host side.
What Hosts Can See
When you make requests to a host, they may have access to:
- Your IP address — Standard for any network connection
- Request data — Search queries, manga/chapter requests, browsing patterns
- Authentication credentials — If the source requires login, credentials are sent to the host (and forwarded to upstream sources)
- Request timing and frequency — When and how often you access their service
Alethia's Position
Alethia is a passthrough client. Alethia does not:
- Operate or endorse any specific hosts
- Have visibility into any data exchanged between you and hosts
- Store or log your host connections or browsing activity
- Have the ability to enforce privacy practices on third-party hosts
The hosts you choose to connect to are entirely your decision and responsibility. It is heavily recommended to use hosts that are trusted, open-source and transparent about their privacy practices.
Recommendations
- Use trusted hosts — Only connect to hosts operated by people or organizations you trust
- Review host privacy policies — If a host publishes privacy documentation, review it before connecting
- Consider self-hosting — For maximum privacy, consider running your own host for personal use
- Be mindful of authentication — When logging into sources through a host, your credentials pass through that host's servers
Third-Party Responsibility
Alethia cannot guarantee the privacy practices of any third-party host. By connecting to a host, you accept that your data is subject to that host operator's practices, which are outside Alethia's control.
Analytics & Tracking
Alethia does not include any analytics, telemetry, or tracking frameworks. Your reading habits and app usage are not monitored or reported by Alethia.
On-Device Intelligence
Alethia uses Apple's Core ML for features like content recommendations. All machine learning processing happens entirely on your device — no data is sent externally for analysis. Your reading patterns and preferences never leave your device for recommendation purposes.
Host-Side Tracking
While Alethia itself does not track you, hosts you connect to could potentially implement their own tracking (e.g., IP-based identification, request logging). This is outside Alethia's control.
